Get to know us: “On February 19, 2015, because of my ovarian cancer diagnosis and relying on a recent probate court ruling by Judge Guy Herman, our brilliant “ninja” attorney, Chuck Herring, persuaded Judge David Wahlberg to issue an order directing Dana DeBeauvoir, our Travis County Clerk, to provide us with a marriage license. Friends were everywhere that morning. Among them: Michael Mitchell helped us through the application process, Rabbi Kerry Baker married us, Glen Maxey signed as our official witness and journalist/activist Jose Andres Araiza captured the moment on video.
Although we were the first couple in Texas to marry, we anxiously awaited the day when other couples could marry legally in Texas! As of July 5th, over 370 weddings had been performed in Travis County since the county began issuing licenses the morning of June 26th. The video created by Kelly West of the Austin American Statesman and published the day of the SCOTUS ruling, Jun 26, 2015, is available on YouTube. Kelly does a great job of capturing many happy couples on this historic day. Gay couples in Austin, Texas poured into the clerk’s office and the county courthouse for marriage licenses and ceremonies immediately following the Supreme Court ruling allowing same-sex couples to marry in all 50 states.” – Sarah Goodfriend, July 11, 2015
