Ben & Tino - La Jolla Wedding

Ben & Tino – La Jolla Wedding

Married: Brazos Hall, Austin, TX, May 9, 2015 – “We married in La Jolla, CA on March 18th, 2015, prior to the SCOTUS decision. The ceremony was officiated by Tino’s sister, who conducted a Mayan and native american union ceremony, surrounded by a small group of friends and family, where no rings or vows were exchanged during that time. We later had our larger, more traditional ceremony in Austin, TX on May 9th, surrounded by 250 of our of our closest family and friends. It was the fairy-tale wedding weekend we had hoped for and thankfully the rainy weather stopped for us just in time! One special idea we loved about our wedding is that instead of a traditional registry, we created a video on our website to express our desire to start a family and encouraged people to donate to our family fund, a special account created solely for offsetting the costs associated with the adoption process. Needless to say it was a huge success and our family is on the way very soon!”

Get to know us: “There are two different stories of how we met. Tino was playing soccer at the time with the local LGBT soccer team, the Austin Gold Stars, when he spotted Ben running the trail around Zilker Park. Ben noticed Tino at a birthday party the next evening! After our first date we were pretty much inseparable and 5 years later we were to be married. Ben owns his own real estate brokerage in Austin and Tino is in educational administration for a local school district, so we are both pretty busy year-round. We enjoy making time for grilling in the backyard with friends, playing with our terrier Moxie, and we love meeting new people and sharing our story.” – Tino Chavez, July 17, 2015

Ben & Tino – Save The Date Photo

P.S. You may be wondering about our save the date photo. This was the image we sent out on a postcard, that was inspired by the old time vintage portraits which were, other than in writing, the only forms of documenting (often hidden) gay relationships of the past. We thought what a great idea to bring that to life and show these two men going into a saloon for a portrait with beautiful women by their side, only to be gazing at each other the whole time. Thanks to the Weather Up in east Austin to be 100% for the idea and for providing a wonderful backdrop and the rest is history…
