That’s what you can expect at the world’s first Gay Wax Museum, debuting this month as part of the inaugural OUTsider Festival. This isn’t your typical wax museum, just as its host, the OUTsider Fest, won’t be your typical multi-arts festival. Unlike festivals before it, OUTsider seeks to not only showcase LGBTQIA artists and their work, but also encourage interaction between artists, audiences and academics, taking the traditional panel discussion or moderated Q&A a step further in hopes of a more refreshing, interactive, and insightful experience. As for the the Gay Wax Museum – it’s also one-of-a-kind and the first of its kind, highlighting queer art that “[celebrates] the many profound and often ephemeral moments of [the queer] collective lineage.”
Curated by multi-media artist, performer and queer activist, Silky Shoemaker, the Gay Wax Museum turns the traditional wax museum on its head with life-sized diorama-style installations depicting the many facets of queer life and history. Though arranged in traditional wax museum “vignettes,” the museum features art in a plethora of sculptural mediums.
Participating artists include filmmaker PJ Raval, multidisciplinary artist Ben Aqua, artists Annie Danger, Paige Gratland and many more. The unveiling of the Gay Wax Museum is set for Wednesday, Feb. 18.
