From Us – Week 23

2578

June is Pride Month, not only in Austin, but numerous cities across the world. The choice of June was very deliberate to commemorate the Stonewall Riots of 1969 and coincidentally is the same month of the deadliest attacks on LGBT people in US history, the UpStairs Lounge arson attack in 1973 in my hometown of New Orleans. Not only did 32 people die in the fire, three of the victims were never identified nor claimed by their families.

Tomorrow, I will have the opportunity to interview Wendy Davis and discuss the advances the LGBT community has made and her vision for how Texas can finally join this march for equality. As always, we count on our readers to help us ask the relevant questions of our community. Be sure to watch our Facebook page for these “What Would You Ask” opportunities. The question with the most likes will be included in our interviews!

This week is a bit quiet around the office as our own Steph Smith has gone west…to Santa Fe. We have been an exclusively digital platform for almost a year now which has expanded our coverage of viewership and readership. As a result, we are hitting the road to meet new leaders, welcome new partners and promote expanding nonprofits. In the coming months, our team will be traveling to New Orleans, Provincetown, San Francisco, Atlanta, Rio de Janeiro, Seaside and more. We would love introductions to your friends and family in these cities as well as suggestions to other places we would get to know!
