JOHN WATERS brings his one-man show to ACL Live this February—get ready for an unforgettable night of heartfelt narratives and raunchy recollections.
“I’ve been doing it for so long—it was originally developed when Divine and I were sent to colleges and nobody knew who we were, so we had to do something. It’s very much like Female Trouble. I wrote this act where Divine would come out and rip phone books in half, and I’d talk about Buddhist camp movies, and then a fake cop would pretend to arrest us and Divine would strangle him.
Now it’s a 70-minute, totally written monologue that I update with new stuff all the time, completely different from the one released on DVD. It’s an act that I’ve always rewritten and changed, but it’s still about my obsessions: It’s about crime and fashion and music and art and films and the people that are in my films, and how you can have a happy life if you decide you want to be a happy neurotic.” — John Waters, Indy Week
Waters has written and directed sixteen movies including Pink Flamingos, Polyester, Hairspray, Cry Baby, Serial Mom and A Dirty Shame. He is a photographer whose work has been shown in galleries all over the world and the author of six books: Shock Value, Crackpot, Pink Flamingos and Other Trash, Hairspray, Female Trouble and Multiple Maniacs, and Art: A Sex Book (co-written with Bruce Hainley) and Role Models. Waters recently penned Carsick, which chronicles a hitchhiking adventure he took across the United States in May of 2012 and is a member of The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences and is on The Wexner Center International Arts Advisory Council. Additionally, he is a past member of the boards of The Andy Warhol Foundation and Printed Matter and was selected as a juror for the 2011 Venice Biennale.
