The Interfaith Action of Central Texas (iACT) will be hosting the 2017 Hope Awards on Tuesday, May 2 at the The Bullock Texas State History Museum, located at 1800 Congress Ave, Austin, TX 78701. The theme for this year’s award show is “Celebrating a Place of Refuge”, acknowledging the importance of our city’s commitment to creating a welcoming community for all faiths. The event will start at 6 p.m. with a reception serving drinks and hors d’oeuvres, followed by the awards program and a seated dinner at 7:15 p.m. At this year’s Hope Awards, iACT will recognize individuals and organizations in Austin who are working to create a warm and welcoming environment for refugees. The 2017 Hope Awards honorees include officials from the Austin Independent School District, The Bullock Texas State History Museum, Mehraz Rahman, A Glimmer of Hope Foundation and St. John’s United Methodist Church. Gilbert Tuhabonye, Rwandan genocide survivor, Austin resident and co-Founder of the Gazelle Foundation, will share inspirational remarks.

The mission of Interfaith Action of Central Texas (iACT) is to cultivate peace and respect through interfaith dialogue, service, and celebration. iACT’s work centers around inclusion, peace, and respect among all faith communities. Their programs strive to be an example of what it looks like to live in harmony and inclusion with one another. The Hope Awards is iACT’s major fundraiser for much-needed community service programs. They include Hands on Housing, which repairs the homes of very low-income seniors and people with disabilities, the iACT for Refugees program which provides basic English instruction to newly-arrived refugees from around the world, and the Red Bench dialogue program which encourages important and meaningful conversations among diverse individuals. This profound organization strives to build a community based on trust, peace and regard for people of all faiths and walks of life, but its need for continued support from the community and beyond is vital to its growth.
