After successful runs of David Hare’s SKYLIGHT and Mike Bartlett’s BULL, Street Corner Arts is set to open Lyle Kessler’s ORPHANS this fall at The Back Pack. This production is the first of Street Corner Arts new Sidewalk Series, an annual project dedicated to providing selected artists in Austin the chance to co-produce a production with the aid and mentorship of Austin professionals. Last seen on Broadway in 2013, Kessler’s ORPHANS has been produced and translated all over the world as a timeless tale of two brothers and their enduring strength to survive.

ORPHANS opens in a north Philadelphia row house where Treat and Phillip live on their own. Treat (Christopher Alvaregna) steals for a living while Phillip (Aaron Johnson) stays at home, hidden from the world, surviving only on canned tuna fish. One night, Treat brings home a drunk older man, Harold (Michael Stuart), in the hopes of robbing him, but Harold is too street savvy for Treat’s tricks. He sees potential in these boys. A battle of wits and chicanery gives way to this odd trio developing a genuine relationship in strange, hilarious, and unexpected ways.

Starring Michael Stuart (ONE MAN TWO GUVNORS, WAITING FOR LEFTY), Aaron Johnson (TRIBES, SKYLIGHT) and introducing Christopher Alvaregna. Directed by Sarah Kimberley Becker.

Johnson and Becker were selected in May to helm Street Corner’s inaugural 2016 Sidewalk Series production.

Join us for a special post-show panel discussion with celebrated playwright Steven Dietz, Professor at UT-Dept of Theatre and Dance and Tyler Elizabeth Layton, Assistant Professor of Theatre Arts at St. Edward’s University. The discussion will be moderated by UT-MFA alum, director, dramaturg and producer Jess Hutchison.

Paula Poundstone Headlines the One World Theatre

One World Theatre, Austin TX
08/20/2016 | 7:00 pm - 8:30 pm

On Saturday, August 20th Award-Winning comedian Paula Poundstone comes to the One World Theatre, in Austin, TX with another hilarious show! “I love The One World Theatre. I’m one of the only people who performs there without a gourd in my percussion section” says Poundstone.

Heralded as one of our country’s foremost comics, Paula Poundstone is legendary for her razor-sharp wit, self-deprecating humor and a spontaneity with a crowd that hands-down is without peer. Her quick thinking, unscripted approach is the perfect fit as a regular panelist on NPR’s #1 show, the screwball weekly news quiz show, Wait Wait…Don’t Tell Me! where she holds the record for game losses. “The others cheat,” she says magnanimously, “you wouldn’t think NPR would put up with that.”

Paula tours regularly. Nick Zaino with the Boston Globe, writes about Paula’s standup: “You know Poundstone’s a great comic the way you know any fine performer when you see one — there’s a disarming ease in her craft, an immediate sense that she’s so quick on her feet you need never worry about the possibility of something going wrong.”  Poundstone’s interchanges with the audience are never mean or done at a person’s expense. She even manages to handle politics without provoking the pall of disapproval received by less artful comics. “With the exception of that one time,” she claims.

The talents of this brilliant humorist extend beyond standup comedy, but stop short of yodeling. One of her dreams came true when she was cast as “Forgetter Paula” in Disney Pixar’s INSIDE OUT, which won the Academy Award for Best Animated Feature Film in 2016.  On June 28, 2016, her first “double live” CD debuted at #1 on Amazon’s “Hot New Releases – Non Fiction” list. Entitled North by Northwest: Paula Poundstone Live! (HighBridge), it was recorded at memorable performance stops in Bayfield, Wisconsin and Portland, Oregon. Says Poundstone, “It’s a joyous romp through a field of cheeseheads and hipsters.”  Paula is also an author.  She has written two hard cover books, the second to be published by Algonquin Books on May 9, 2017.  Her commentaries have been seen on CBS News Sunday Morning.

Paula’s long list of accomplishments includes being the first woman, after 72 years, to share the stage with the President and host the prestigious White House Correspondents dinner.  Only four women have followed in her pioneering footsteps.  She rocked the comedy establishment when, in 1992, she won the Cable ACE for Best Standup Comedy Special, the first woman to do so.  Cited over and over again for her comedic originality, Paula is an American Comedy Award winner, and is included in Comedy Central’s list of 100 Greatest Stand-Ups of All Time. But Paula considers her greatest achievement being a Mom of 3 children.  She lives in Santa Monica where she also has 2 dogs, 14 cats, and one ant left from her ant farm.
