Austin Opera presents "Of Mice and Men"

The Long Center, Austin TX
01/27/2016 - 02/6/2016 | 7:30 pm - 10:00 pm

Austin Opera continues its long-standing commitment to American and English-language opera with Carlisle Floyd’s operatic rendition of John Steinbeck’s iconic novella, Of Mice and Men, foundational support provided by the Georgia B. Lucas Foundation.

Based on John Steinbeck’s novella Of Mice and Men, this riveting American opera is a faithful retelling of one of America’s most celebrated works of literature. Carlisle Floyd vividly captures the lives of the characters, the feel of the era, the bunkhouse, the depressed economy, and Lennie’s tragic story.

Stage director Kristine McIntyre, known for her visually stunning and emotionally rich productions, has directed more than 50 operas throughout the United States at The Metropolitan Opera, Pittsburgh Opera, Arizona Opera, Dallas Opera, and many others. McIntyre’s “canny ability to meld visual and musical elements” will seamlessly allow Floyd’s score and libretto full voice to clearly communicate the work’s central theme—that personal relationship, however tenuous, is far superior to solitary existence.

“Of Mice and Men” is an important work of theater, literature, film and, of course, opera. Its plea for compassion and hope is as timely now as when John Steinbeck wrote the novella on which the opera is based.

An Opera in three acts, sung in English with lyrics projected above the stage.

Saturday, January 23, 7:30 p.m.
Thursday, January 28, 7:30 p.m.
Friday, January 31, 3:00 p.m.

Tickets: $35 – $200

Bill W. and Doctor Bob

Long Center for the Performing Arts, Austin Texas
02/3/2016 - 02/4/2016 | 7:30 pm - 10:00 pm

The Long Center presents Bill W. and Doctor Bob, February 2-7 in the Rollins Studio Theatre.

In 1929, famous New York stockbroker Bill Wilson crashes with the stock market and becomes a hopeless drunk. Dr. Bob Smith, a surgeon from Ohio, has also been an alcoholic for thirty years, often going into the operating room with a hangover. Through an astonishing series of events, Bill W. and Dr. Bob meet and form a relationship, each helping to keep the other sober. This is the amazing and often humorous story of the two men who pioneered Alcoholics Anonymous, as well as the story of their wives, who founded Al Anon.

The vision of this production is to celebrate the power of recovery, educate people about the disease of alcoholism through breaking down barriers and stigmas, and support outreach to all who still suffer and their friends and loved ones.

As many reviews have said: ‘This play is not just for AA, it’s a play for everyone.

  • *Please note that Thursday, February 4th’s performance will be performed in Spanish.

Fixing Timon of Athens

The Off Center, Austin Texas
02/4/2016 | 8:00 pm - 9:30 pm

by William Shakespeare

fixed by Kirk Lynn

directed by Madge Darlington

Nationally acclaimed theatre company Rude Mechs is proud to present the world premiere of Fixing Timon of Athens.

It’s pretty simple. Timon starts out super rich and super positive and super popular, but his frivolous generosity takes its toll. After getting even with the people he feels betrayed him, he wanders off into the woods, super poor and super pissed off… finds more gold, then dies alone. Also there’s a warrior that is in some kind of trouble with the Senate.

Warning: Lots of “F” bombs.
