Austin Opera presents "Of Mice and Men"

The Long Center, Austin TX
01/23/2016 - 02/2/2016 | 7:30 pm - 10:00 pm

Austin Opera continues its long-standing commitment to American and English-language opera with Carlisle Floyd’s operatic rendition of John Steinbeck’s iconic novella, Of Mice and Men, foundational support provided by the Georgia B. Lucas Foundation.

Based on John Steinbeck’s novella Of Mice and Men, this riveting American opera is a faithful retelling of one of America’s most celebrated works of literature. Carlisle Floyd vividly captures the lives of the characters, the feel of the era, the bunkhouse, the depressed economy, and Lennie’s tragic story.

Stage director Kristine McIntyre, known for her visually stunning and emotionally rich productions, has directed more than 50 operas throughout the United States at The Metropolitan Opera, Pittsburgh Opera, Arizona Opera, Dallas Opera, and many others. McIntyre’s “canny ability to meld visual and musical elements” will seamlessly allow Floyd’s score and libretto full voice to clearly communicate the work’s central theme—that personal relationship, however tenuous, is far superior to solitary existence.

“Of Mice and Men” is an important work of theater, literature, film and, of course, opera. Its plea for compassion and hope is as timely now as when John Steinbeck wrote the novella on which the opera is based.

An Opera in three acts, sung in English with lyrics projected above the stage.

Saturday, January 23, 7:30 p.m.
Thursday, January 28, 7:30 p.m.
Friday, January 31, 3:00 p.m.

Tickets: $35 – $200

“We are excited to launch our third year of celebrating the most amazing music in Austin,” said Colin Kendrick, Black Fret Founder. “It is inspiring to see Austin music lovers step up to support our local music in such a meaningful way and we know 2016 will be the best year yet.”

“Ben E. Keith is honored to contribute in anyway to an organization that does so much to support the cultural and social fabric of the Austin community,” said Kevin Nettleton, General Manager of Ben E. Keith. “The Black Fret vision is truly inspiring. We look forward to an exciting year.”

To date, Black Fret has awarded $280,000 in grants to Austin musicians and the organization hopes to grow its grant-giving program exponentially in 2016. Founded in January of 2013, Black Fret is a 501(c)3 public charity headquartered in Austin, Texas and is built upon the simple principle that popular local music, like the symphony and opera, is worthy of community support. To that end, Black Fret is gathering a limited group of 1,333 Patrons of Local Music, each of whom will make a $1,500 annual contribution. At capacity, these contributions will create an annual pool of $2,000,000 that will fund grants, performances and operations while building an institutional endowment that will fund growth in future grants.

“To have awarded $280,000 to local musicians in only our first two years of giving demonstrates that a relatively small group of people can have a huge impact,” said Matt Ott, Black Fret Co-founder. “We ask every Austinite to join us in supporting our local music. With each new Black Fret member we take another big step forward to realizing our mission of helping our finest local musicians create and perform their amazing music.”

Long Center presents I Am Big Bird

The Long Center, Austin TX
01/30/2016 | 7:00 pm - 9:00 pm

The Long Center
701 W. Riverside Dr.
Austin TX 78704

The Long Center presents I Am Big Bird with Carroll Spinney, January 30 in Dell Hall.
Saturday, January 30; 7:00PM
This heartwarming doc chronicles the life of Caroll Spinney, the man who has been Sesame Street’s Big Bird and Oscar the Grouch since 1969.
For over 4 decades, Caroll’s characters have been cherished by generations of children. At 81 years old, the tenacious and enthusiastic performer has no intention of slowing down. I AM BIG BIRD features incredible footage of Spinney’s earliest collaborations with Jim Henson as it traces Caroll’s journey from bullied child to celebrated performer. This loving portrait peels away the instances that inspired his creation of Big Bird and as the yellow feathers give way to grey hair, it is the man, not the puppet, who will steal your heart.
After the film, Spinney will be live answering questions, telling never-before-heard stories, and bringing our memories back to life.
Dubbed “simply gleeful viewing” by Moviefone, I AM BIG BIRD will be released simultaneously in theaters and on cable VOD/iTunes throughout the world in May 2015.
This show is currently only available as part of a Season Ticket Package. Tickets go on-sale to the general public October 15 at 12pm.
