Austin Opera presents Verdi’s “Aida”

The Long Center, Austin TX
11/7/2015 - 11/15/2015 | 7:30 pm - 10:30 pm

Famous for its Triumphal March and soaring arias, Guiseppe Verdi’s “Aida” is an intimate story of a love triangle between enemies during the times of war between Egypt and Ethiopia. Graced with some of Verdi’s greatest music, it’s a tour de force of choral scenes, dance, massive sets, and vocal power. Issachah Savage and Karen Slack will make their Austin Opera debuts in this beloved story of ill-fated love and betrayal. Stage director Brian Deedrick, former Artistic Director of the Edmonton Opera, will bring Verdi’s spectacular opera to life with powerful vocals, themes of patriotism and betrayal, and sets dominated by a looming Sphinx-like stone face that changes from blood-red at sunset to a ghostly shadow peering from the gloom of the final duet.

The key to the staying power of “Aida” for more than 140 years since its premier has been the human story under it all. At the heart of this opera is the story of an Ethiopian slave and secret princess Aida, her powerful Egyptian mistress, Princess Amneris, and their shared love for the ambitious soldier Ramades. Their love story, wrapped in complex themes of loyalty, longing, nation and regret, is told in four acts using some of the most intricate and complicated music that Verdi ever wrote, with voices blending like ribbons of sound.

Aida features the Austin Opera Chorus and the Austin Opera Orchestra. It is an Opera in four acts with intermissions after Act II and Act III, and is sung in Italian with English translations projected above the stage.

Saturday, November 7, 7:30 p.m.
Thursday, November 12, 7:30 p.m.
Sunday, November 15, 3 p.m.

Tickets are $15–$200 and can be purchased at http://austinopera.org/event/aida/.

Art Alliance Austin is delighted to announce its first annual ARTBASH 2015 taking place Saturday, Nov. 7 at The Belmont located at 305 W 6th St., Austin, Texas 78701. The event will take place from 9 p.m. to 2 a.m. Modeled after NYC’s CREATIVETIME Fall Ball series, this event will bring together Austin’s diverse art community and patrons, bringing art to life through interactions and experiences unlike anything Austin has seen before. Each room of the venue will be transformed by site-specific installations, performance, music, food and audience engagements. The evening will be capped with a crazy fun dance party led by a team of SXSW DJs. This project is supported in part by the Cultural Arts Division of the City of Austin Economic Development Department. Other sponsors include Tito’s Handmade VodkaPreacher, Austin Beerworks and SXSW. The event’s Host Committee is chaired by Valerie Cason. Tickets are $85 per person, which include four drink tickets. For $250, guests can also attend an exclusive dinner from 6 to 9 p.m., which will include a curated dinner and drinks, plus a general admission ticket for the remainder of the event. Tickets are on sale and can be purchased at www.artallianceaustin.org.

To curate this exciting event, Art Alliance Austin is working with Andrea Hyland and Seth Orion Schwaiger, two highly revered artists and curators based within Austin. Each has extensive experience curating exhibitions, events and collections from New York to Los Angeles to Glasgow.

“This celebration will give you an opportunity to explore and experience contemporary art,” said Andrea HylandCo-Curator of ARTBASH. “We decided to use dreams as the primary point of departure for deciding on which art and artists to include. The goal is to develop an event that pushes boundaries, has surrealist tones, and evokes personal and emotive experiences. We’re creating an immersive series of events with ARTBASH that showcase a blend of established and emerging artists, representing a wide-variety of creative disciplines within the visual arts.”

“We’re very excited to introduce ARTBASH to the Austin scene,” said Asa Hursh, Executive Director of Art Alliance Austin. “It’s a single night exhibition and event that will become a fixture on the social calendar. Some of Austin’s most-talked-about artists will be premiering new work.”

“Culture takes many forms, but the stale stuffy side of art can hog that label,” said Seth Orion SchwaigerCo-Curator of ARTBASH. “Join us for ARTBASH and enjoy visual art, performances, music and dance, all free from the weight of their usual formality.”
