Off Center Teens is Rude Mechs’ 2-week, full-day camp where teens create an entire theatrical performance based on their life experiences from scratch.
Each summer, the participants take the stage and transform their autobiographical writing into powerful and personal public performances.
Off Center Teens is led by Megan Tabaque and Patrick Shaw, and enhanced by guest faculty and visiting artists Vincent Tomasino, Alexa Capareda, Jenny Arffmann, and Travis Tate. The performance is directed by Rude Mechs Co-Producing Artistic Director Madge Darlington.
Now in its 18th summer, Off Center Teens performances will take place at The Lab Theatre on UT Austin’s campus.

Off Center Teens is a program of Rude Mechanicals – A Theatre Collective and is funded in part by a grant from the Texas Commission on the Arts. Rude Mechs is supported in part by the Cultural Arts Division of the City of Austin Economic Development Department.
About Rude Mechs:
Celebrating its 20th anniversary year, Rude Mechs is a collective theatre company that has created a genre-defying cocktail of 30 original plays. Our repertory includes Stop Hitting Yourself, commissioned by and premiered at Lincoln Center, Now Now Oh Now, a National Theatre Pilot winner, I’ve Never Been So Happy, our western extravaganza, and The Method Gun, which has toured to such far-flung destinations as Brisbane (Australia), and Houston, Texas.
Rude Mechs is committed to:
Creating original, live performance for the new canon;
Serving as cultural ambassadors for our home city and state as we tour nationally and internationally;
Mentoring emerging theatre artists;
Articulating the practice of collaborative creation and advocating for devised work in the field;
Sharing material resources with the community;
Providing free or low-cost work space for artists of all disciplines;
Keeping our productions and programs affordable;
Engaging the audience as collaborators in our art-making process; and
Fostering confidence and creativity in young people through the power of performance.
