Fashion: Michael Wilkinson at the Harry Ransom Center

2370

From American Hustle’s 70s-inspired looks to the latest Superman costume, costumes bring films alive nearly as much as the actors wearing them do. And while it may not be often when the works of costume designers are celebrated, the Austin Film Society, Julian Gold, and the Harry Ransom Center have teamed up to present a special tribute to Hollywood costume designer Michael Wilkinson.

Wilkinson’s design work includes costumes for hit films like 300, NOAH, Tron: Legacy, the final Twilight, American Hustle (for which he was nominated for an Oscar) and more. Currently, he’s working on costumes for the upcoming blockbuster Batman vs. Superman: Dawn of Justice, slated for a 2016 release. In addition to his praised design work, Wilkinson and his partner, Tim Martin, operate WilkinsonMartin, a design firm, “exploring the intersection of film and fashion.”

The special tribute kicks off with a cocktail reception followed by an intimate conversation with Wilkinson about his working methods and experiences, moderated by Bobi Garland, director of the 100-year Old Western Costume Company’s Research Library. The event also features exclusive illustrations, photos, clips and select costumes from three of the films Wilkinson has designed for, including Noah, Man of Steel and American Hustle (yes, Jennifer Lawrence’s memorable white dress will be there). In addition, the evening boasts special guests and surprises, so don’t wait too late to snag your tickets.
