L
Style G Style is about people, community and vision. My grandmother always
said I needed to make my mark in the community: Settle in and get to know
one another and figure out ways to give back and better what’s around you.
It all started on a weekend away in Portland, Ore. While I was walking through
the streets, I started writing about all the things that inspired me from
my past.
I thought about the old Sears and Spiegel catalogs I used to thumb through,
noticing that the hardware and electronics section (for the men) was displayed
on one side and you would “flip it” over and the fashion section (for the
ladies) was on the other side.
I journaled about all sorts of things: leaders in my community, my mentors,
design, architecture, and fun things that inspire me like Mad Libs, flip
books, origami, instructional handbooks, my collection of inherited matchbooks
from every chain restaurant south of Houston, roller skates ... you name
it. After putting it all down, an idea spawned: I would create an eclectic
publication highlighting the gay and lesbian community that would inspire,
educate and enlighten, and speak to people like me.
Our goal with L Style G Style is to offer the public a different view on
the gay and lesbian community. I want to profile the best in our community
so that we “normalize” who we are in the view of others who may not know
us. L Style refers to “lesbian” style and G Style refers to “gay” style,
however any one person may also interpret it as "lady” or “guy" style
— that’s the beauty of it. I want to remove all stereotypes, capturing stories
about visionaries, entrepreneurs, creatives, people who give back and those
who inspire others. I want our readers to feel uplifted after discovering
L Style G Style.
Within the pages of L Style G Style, we hope to encourage our readers to
participate. With our informative articles and helpful columns, this publication
is designed to have a long shelf life, unlike many other magazines you may
toss aside after one read. We hope you find L Style G Style a valued resource,
and as unique as we do.
My sincerest appreciation,
